Furry Hearts

I came into the hospital at 3am 1/26/23 for a scheduled induction. I was settled into my labor and delivery room. An IV was started with fluids and antibiotics. I was given a medication to soften my cervix around 4am. At 8am I was dilated to 1.5cm. I was given another dose of medication to soften my cervix more as well as had a filet catheter inserted into my cervix to dilate more. Within 2 hours, I was dilated to 3cm and the catheter had fallen out. My contractions were very intense and regular, I opted to getting an epidural. This was inserted around 12pm. At 1pm, I was started on Pictocin to bring on more/stronger contractions. I was very comfortable at this point and could not feel any pain/contractions, just a lot of pelvic pressure. After about 1.5 hours with the pictocin drip, our daughters heart rate began dropping. The drip was paused to give our sweet girl time to recover from the distress. Around 6pm they restarted Pictocin as our baby had recovered and was stable. At 7pm, the baby had gone back into distress and her heart rate was dropping again. I was given 2 options, break from the Pictocin and restart the medication in a few hours or get a c-section. Knowing our daughter already had medical concerns, I did not want to put her into distress again with a fear she may not recover like she did the 2 times previously. I consented to a c-section and within 15 minutes I was taken to the operating room. At this point, I was nervous but very anxious and excited to finally welcome our baby girl into the world. She was born at 8:16pm weighing 6lbs 8oz and measuring 19in long. She was born with a full head of hair and absolutely perfect. Wrenleigh was taken to the NICU immediately after birth. They placed her on a ventilator, inserted IV lines and began imaging. We were aware before birth that her heart is on the right and the right lung was under developed. Her chest X-ray showed air around left lung and under right rib caused from her first few breaths. Chest tubes were inserted to help remove the unwanted air. A tube was inserted into her nose to supply her with nutrition. She was connected to heart monitors. Wrenleigh was started almost immediately on a morphine drip to allow her to be sedated, comfortable and let her body rest as it had been working so hard since her delivery. We finally got to see our baby girl at 245am on 1/27/23. Throughout the day, lots of blood work and testing was being performed. Wrenleigh is stable at this point but very sick. The doctors switched her to a conventional ventilator. At 6pm, the NICU doctor came to room and recommended transferring baby girl to Children’s Hospital as her heart and lungs weren’t working together to oxygenate her blood as they should have been. The doctor thought she may need to be started on a machine called ECMO. This is when an IV line is inserted into the neck. The machine then removes her blood, oxygenates it and returns it into the body. This makes her survival rate incredibly low due to the thinning of the blood. She was transferred to Children’s urgently at 630pm. Myself, dad and grandma were able to go down and say goodbye as she being prepared for transfer. Transfer went great and Wrenleigh remained stable throughout the ride. They got her hooked back up to all the monitors and machines. Children’s ran some blood work and they showed improvement therefore they did not start ECMO. As of 7pm 1/28/23, my baby girl has made nothing but improvements. The ventilator is only breathing 34% now! Her left chest tubes is sealed off as X-rays show improvement! Wrenleigh is very comfortable and recognizes mommy, daddy and grandma’s voices. She is heavily sedated but moves whenever mommy talks and sings to her over the phone. Baby’s sedation will be weaned tomorrow. Ventilator settings are decreased every hour as long as she tolerates it and maintains her oxygen saturation. Ultrasound of her head showed no bleeding or abnormalities which is GREAT. Various imaging, blood work and monitoring will continue. Grandma Amanda Sutton Tuttle has been by Wrenleigh’s side in the NICU since transfer and dad has stayed by mine💕 We can’t thank everyone enough for the continued prayers and support for our rainbow baby. I am sorry I cannot respond to every person that has texted or messaged me. This has been a lot to process on top of recovering from a c-section.
